About Luís Valente

Professional translator and reviser since 2015, with a Law degree and substantial experience in legal, technical, industrial, financial and official documentation.

Specialised translation with legal training

I have worked professionally in translation and language services since 2015 and hold a Law degree from Universidade Católica Portuguesa. This background is particularly relevant to legal translation: contracts, pleadings, judgments, court notices, powers of attorney, corporate records and transaction documents often require an understanding of legal function as well as terminology.

I work directly with companies, professionals and individuals. I assess the purpose, language pair, format and any documentary formalities before accepting an assignment, and I personally carry out the translation and final checking.

Technical, industrial and financial documentation

My experience extends well beyond legal texts. In technical and industrial translation, I have worked extensively with user, installation, operation and maintenance manuals; machinery and equipment; manufacturing and automotive documentation; specifications; procedures; safety information; and conformity or regulatory materials.

In financial translation, my work includes annual reports and accounts, financial statements, audit documentation, banking and financing materials, insurance, capital-markets content and documentation connected with corporate transactions and M&A. This combination of legal and financial subject matter is particularly useful in document sets that cross conventional specialisation boundaries.

I also have additional experience with clinical reports, scientific literature and technical or regulatory documentation for medical devices. Medical content is assessed case by case according to the subject matter and language pair.

Revision, QA and editorial work

My work also includes linguistic and terminological revision, proofreading, quality assurance and post-editing. I check meaning, omissions, terminology, register, figures, dates, references, repeated elements and compliance with project instructions. Where clients provide glossaries, style guides or previous translations, these can be used to maintain consistency across a document set.

Between 2018 and 2022 I carried out external editorial revision of school textbooks in subjects including philosophy, economics, mathematics and geography. This involved not only running text but also captions, exercises, tables, graphs and other structured editorial elements.

Published translations

In 2022 I translated two non-fiction books from English into European Portuguese. The translation credits can be checked in the Portuguese National Library catalogue:
